Statement:
To create a work of art begins with a question, a desire, a longing. A prayer commences; a call goes out. Listening for the answer is for me, done best while hands are busy. Painting is the way I listen. Painting of fire is my resonance on war, spirit, change and life. War is a great transformation.
Fire and war, in the context of my art, is a conduit of souls and a transformation of matter. The pain of giving birth to a nation that is the fruit of the Age of Enlightenment. Shifts of power. Societal evolution. A device of wicked men. Even sport. But a new beginning come. A clearing of the old.
I grew fond of dye in silk artwork because of the vivid color, the graphical nature of resist drawing, the subtlety and nuances nature demands reckoning with in the chemistry, the long-plotting layering of technique and the supremely spontaneous moment when the painting arrives.
